Statement

In my practice, I create materially hybrid objects and installations that delve into the intersections of consumerism, colonization, and cultural hybridity. The materials I work with, such as silk, tea, and porcelain, are deeply connected to the British colonization of China, originating in the East and gaining prominence in the West through trade and war. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I consider these materials integral to my cultural identity.

Incorporating poems that reflect the nuanced weight of words in both Chinese and English, my work echoes my bilingual education and the shared experience of code-switching among bilingual individuals. This interplay of language and material serves as a mirror to the complexities of navigating two cultures.

Recently, my practice has shifted to focus on universal experiences such as loss, guilt, and grief. Through this exploration, I aim to examine how these emotions are experienced and expressed differently in Chinese and American cultures, creating a dialogue that bridges cultural perspectives on shared human emotions.
